Did you know that you can order your child's yearbook online this year? Go to South Salem Yearbooks. From there you can input the zip code 24153 and click on South Salem to order a yearbook. Sales began November 3, 2011. If you order before February 18, 2012, the cost of the yearbook will be $18.00. After February 18th, the cost will be $20.00.

Jump Start!

The teachers arrive back at South Salem on Monday to begin setting up their classrooms to welcome our children. Each year the PTA coordinates a program called Jumpstart the week before school starts. For just a few hours, volunteers help teachers prepare for the upcoming school year by laminating, cutting, gluing, sorting, copying, and MANY other things. This year Jumpstart will be on Wednesday, August 31, 2010 from 9:00 to approximately 12:00.

If you could help on Wednesday, please contact Amy Young at 362-7888. We would like to know in advance how many people to expect. Any amount of time you could give would be greatly appreciated! If you have kids who need community service hours for scouts or school projects, this is a GREAT way to earn community service hours.

Back To School Night and Kindergarten Orientation

Back to School Night and Kindergarten Orientation is scheduled for Thursday, September 1, 2011. Kindergarten Orientation will begin at 5:00 p.m. Back to School Night will begin at 6:15 p.m. Please note that this is a change from previous years where we had two Back to School Nights.

It's that time again! The South Salem PTA Walk-A-Thon will be Thursday, April 7, 2011 during the school day. Each class will spend some part of their day walking. What healthier way to support our school! After walking, the kids will get a sweet, refreshing treat before heading back to their school day!

March PTA Meeting - First Grade Program

The South Salem PTA is running another contest. Save your Box Tops and Campbell's soup labels. Send them in to your child's teacher. These are being used to get equipment and supplies for our teachers. Our current contest ends February 18th!

South Salem Winter Carnival

Mark calendars now! The South Salem Winter Carnival will be Saturday, March 11, 2011 from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at South Salem Elementary. There will be games, food and most important of all...FUN! We will be looking for volunteers to work the games and food stands during the carnival. We are also looking for donations of new or homemade items to be used for the silent auction. If you or your business is able to make a donation, or you know of someone who might be willing to make a donation, please contact Suzanne Thomas.

Oh the Movies You'll See at South Salem....

Join us on December 10, 2010 at 6:00 p.m. for South Salem PTA's Annual Movie Night! We will be showing "Charlie Brown Christmas," "Frosty the Snowman," "Rudolph" and "How the Grinch Stole Christmas." Come dressed in your favorite pajamas and bring a blanket to sit on while you munch on yummy snacks from our Snack Bar and watch these favorite holiday movies. Come early with your blanket to stake out your "spot."

Once again, we will have pictures with Santa in the library starting at 5:00 p.m. The cost of the pictures will be $3.00 each or 2 for $5.00.

Whole Salem Pizza and Subs Pizza will be $7.00 or $2.00 a slice.
Cheese Nachos - $3.00
Drinks - 75 cents
Bottled water - 75 cents
Chips - 50 cents a bag

Debi and I wanted to let you know that we have worked with our partner the Virginia Parent Information Resource Center (VPIRC), to get the Governor, Robert F. McDonnell, to proclaim October 2010 as Family Involvement In Education Month in the Commonwealth of Virginia! I have attached a copy of the Proclamation signed by the Governor.

This is a wonderful opportunity for us. Please share this news!

We are also working with VPIRC on a couple of activities during the month of October, as well as some other events planned for the Southwestern part of the state. We will get you those details as soon as we have them.

Kroger Gift Card Fundraiser

Dear South Salem Family:

On behalf of the South Salem PTA and the Fundraising Committee, WELCOME to what is sure to be another successful school year at South Salem. In an effort to make fundraising for the school FUN and EASY, we would like you to join us by participating in the Kroger Neighborhood Reward Program.

To order a Kroger Gift Card simply complete the Kroger Gift Card Order Form and return it with your check to your child's home room teacher. Your Kroger Gift Card(s) will be sent home with your child.

Reload your card with additional value when you shop or purchase gas at Kroger

You may reload the card with any value up to $250 in Kroger stores or up to $100 at fuel centers

You may pay for your reloaded card with cash, check, or major credit card

Your card must be reloaded at the register BEFORE your purchases are scanned

If your card reaches a zero balance, DO NOT throw it away. Purchases cannot be credited to South Salem unless they are made using an official Reward Program Gift Card (the regular gift cards for sale at Kroger do not count)

The balance on your card will be shown at the bottom of your receipt

It's that time again...Back to School!!

It's almost that time again. Time for school to start and back to the routine of getting up, out to the bus and to school. It also means it's time for South Salem PTA's annual Jump Start. On Wednesday, September 1, 2010 from 9:30 until 12:30 (approximately) at the school, the PTA will be looking for volunteers to help the teachers and staff get ready for the 2010-2011 school year. There will be a lot to do, so whether you can stay the entire three hours or just 30 minutes, your help will be greatly appreciated.

Skate Night Is still On!!!

Good afternoon everyone. I have had several parents call me this afternoon and say their children said Skate night was Canceled. Skate night is only canceled for fifth grade due to a test they have on Wednesday. However, they get their own make up skate night on June 1st. A note went home with just 5th graders explaining that today. We will have a skate night tomorrow night for grades K-4th from 6-8 pm. And another Skate Night for K-5 on April 27th. Let me know if you get any questions from a parent. Again sorry for the confusion. Have a great afternoon.

Movie night is tomorrow Friday November 20th.. If you can please donate some Christmas cookies. There will be a table in the front of the school from 7:30 to 4:30 to drop off your cookies. Also Santa pictures and food sales will start at 6. Picture are $1.00 each. The movie "Santa Clause II" will start at 7. Remember watching the movie is free. Please bring your own blanket to sit on. Parents and children are welcome to wear their favorite Christmas PJ's.

SOUTH SALEM MOVIE NIGHT!!! Friday November 20th at South Salem. Admission to see Santa Clause 2 is free. Santa pictures will begin at 6 p.m. in the library. The cost is $1.00 per photo. Food will be sold starting at 6p.m. A 5 foot stocking full of new items and gift cards will be raffled off. Please come in your favorite PJ's and bring a blanket to sit on. The movie will be in the gym and the cafeteria. If you would like to volunteer to help out that night please email Teresa or Suzanne Thomas.

Weather Update for Fall festival

Just an update on the Fall Festival. We will still have the festival rain or shine from 10am-2pm!! There is inside abd outside activities so PLEASE dress for the weather!!!!
Bring a rain coat or umbrella or sweater. It will be loads of fun and great activities for the whole family!!!
So come on out and have a great family fun day!!!!

Fall PTA Fundraiser!!

The South Salem PTA’s Fall Fundraiser will be with Va. Diner Peanuts. The Fundraiser begins September 17, 2009. By selling Va. Diner products, you and your family help support our school and raise money to support the PTA programs that help our children and the school. Your child will also be eligible for prizes. The PTA will be sponsoring a prize for the class that sells the most.

We know a lot of families have friends and family members that live out of town but who still want to support your child. To help with that, your friends and family can order online at www.VirginiaDiner.com and have their order shipped directly to their home!

All completed order forms and money must be turned in no later than October 1, 2009. Checks should be made payable to South Salem PTA.
